The Council on Contemporary Families is now accepting applications for its 2007 Media Awards competition. The awards honor outstanding journalism that contributes to the public understanding of contemporary family issues. Writers, editors and producers are invited to submit applications. Deadline is March 2, and the awards will be presented in May in Chicago.  Visit CCF's website for details.

The Institute of International Education offers fellowships to academic professionals who are under threat. The Scholar Rescue Fund selects individuals on the basis of academic qualifications, quality of work and urgency of risks faced. Application deadlines occur several times throughout the year; the next is April 1. Visit IIE's website to learn more.

Crimes of War is now accepting applications for a one-day training workshop on the laws of armed conflict and how they apply in the circumstances of contemporary warfare. Mid-career journalists may apply to attend the session, which will be held March 28 in Washington, DC. Application deadline is March 9.  Visit the Crimes of War website for more information.

Journalists from the Middle East and North Africa may submit applications for the 2007 Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press. The award, which aims to promote media freedom and the rule of law in the region, is named after the former Lebanese columnist and academic who was assassinated in 2005 for criticising Syria's policy toward Lebanon. It is presented by the European Commission Delegation in Lebanon in association with the Samir Kassir Foundation. Deadline is March 30.  Click here for more information.

The Atlanta-based Carter Center is now accepting applications for its Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism. Six one-year fellowships will be awarded to journalists to study a selected topic regarding mental health or mental illnesses. Applicants must have at least three years of experience in print or electronic journalism. Deadline is April 23.  Visit the Carter Center website for details.

Mid-career journalists are invited to apply for a six-month fellowship with the Kiplinger Program for Public Affairs Journalism at Ohio State University. Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Deadline is July 24.  Visit the Kiplinger website to learn more.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2007 Excellence in Urban Journalism Award. Sponsored by Enterprise Community Partners and the Freedom Forum, the award recgonizes quality reporting on major issues facing the United States' urban areas, particularly inner cities. Media outlets are invited to apply for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Community Health Program for Immigrants. The program supports partnerships to improve immigrants' health, work and civic participation.  Visit the website for more information.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications for its 2007 fellowship program. Radio, television and print journalists ages 25 to 35 are invited to apply for the 10-week fellowship. Application deadline is April 30.  Visit the website for details or to apply.

The Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism celebrate freelance print journalism and local reporters who show courage and commitment to reporting on controversial issues. Two $5,000 prizes are awarded each year. The prizes honor Kurt Schork, an American freelance journalist who was killed in 2000 in Sierra Leone while on assignment for Reuters. The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association is now accepting entries for its Excellence in Journalism Awards. The awards recognize outstanding coverage of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues in print, broadcast, online and photojournalism categories. The International Policy Network is now accepting submissions for its 2007 Bastiat Prize for Journalism. The award was developed to recognize writers whose work embodies aspects of a free society. Deadline is June 30.  Visit the IPN website for details.

The Religion Newswriters Association's Lilly Scholarships in Religion offer financial assistance to reporters to further their religious education. Full-time journalists in the U.S. and Canada are eligible. Deadline is July 1.  Visit RNA's website for details.

Nominations are now being accepted for the UNESCO-IPDC Prize for Rural Communication, which honors innovative ideas that improve communication in rural, developing communities. The $20,000 prize is awarded every two years to an institution or individual from an UNESCO member state. Eligible projects can include newspapers, films, broadcasting, multimedia programs or other new or traditional forms of media. Deadline is October 1.  Click here for details and an application.

Applications are now being accepted for the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships, which give journalists from the developing world the opportunity to work as reporters in American newsrooms. The program, which runs from mid-March to September, is offered annually to approximately ten professional print journalists between the ages of 25 and 35.
