The Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media is a groundbreaking study that presents a comprehensive picture of women's standing in the news media worldwide. The Global Report, unveiled in March 2011 at the International Conference of Women Media Leaders in Washington, D.C., includes data from more than 500 media organizations. Top news executives from forty countries gathered to discuss its findings and create a plan of action to achieve gender equity in newsrooms globally.
Celebrating IWMF’s 20th anniversary year, the International Conference of Women Media Leaders brought together powerful minds to reflect on the future of women in the news media. The conference was convened to create an international plan of action for advancing women journalists worldwide, and to design a roadmap for how to accomplish change. Women media executives gathered in March 2011 at the George Washington University Global Media Institute in Washington, D.C.
This reporting fellowship provides international women journalists with the opportunity to exchange knowledge with local journalists in the Western Sahara, and to gain firsthand insight into the region's culture and economic development. Funded by The Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the fellowship aims to bring attention to underreported stories from the Western Sahara, with a focus on economic development issues.
The IWMF has launched its first-ever reporting fellowship program in the Philippines to transform news media coverage of environmental issues. The IWMF is providing advanced training and coaching to10 journalists, preparing them to produce innovative reports about environmental problems and solutions, incorporating women's role in and perspectives on environmental issues. By the conclusion of the year-long fellowship, these journalists will become environmental reporting specialists.
With generous support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the IWMF implemented Reporting on Women and Agriculture: Africa, a four-year initiative that changed the way African media cover one of the most important topics on the continent.
