Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz reports on Bob Woodruff, the ABC News anchor who was severely injured in Iraq by an IED in January 2006. Forty-five writers received Hellman/Hammett grants this year from Human Rights Watch. The individuals, from 22 countries, were recognized for their courage in the face of political persecution. Read about the awardees on HRW's website.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has released a new report that documents hundreds of cases of media repression in dozens of countries. Attacks on the Press examines the growing number of journalists who were killed and jailed for their work in 2006. Read CPJ's report online.

Russian president Vladimir Putin vowed Feb. 1 to protect the press. Responding to an international outcry over the murder of Russian journalist and former Courage in Journalism Award recipient Anna Politkovskaya, Putin for the first time acknowleged the importance of Politkovskaya's work. He had previously said Politkovskaya's "influence on political life in Russia was minimal.” According to a recent CPJ study, Russia is the third deadliest country in the world for journalists over the past 15 years. Three women's rights activists and journalists were arrested in Iran on their way to a journalism workshop in India. Two of the three, Talat Taghinia and Mansoureh Shojai write for online journal Zanestan (City of Women) The third woman, Farnaz Seify, runs a popular feminist blog. The Network of Women in Media in will hold its fifth annual meeting Feb. 9-11 in Bangalore, India. The event will include panel discussions and the launch of the Anupama Jayaraman Memorial Award for young women journalists. Visit NWMI's website for further details.

Kimberly Dozier, the CBS journalist who was wounded in a car bombing in Iraq in May, visited CBS News' headquarters Jan. 30 for the first time since the attack. Dozier is still undergoing therapy to repair her legs from shrapnel from the bombing, which killed her British camera crewmen Paul Douglas and James Brolan, as well as a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi translator. According to the Media Foundation for West Africa, attacks on journalists in West Africa increased in 2006. Nigeria led all countries in the region with 32 recorded violations of press freedom. Read the MFWA report.

Freedom House, which supports the expansion of freedom in the world, has issued a new report, "Freedom in the World 2007," which surveys political rights and civil liberties worldwide. The report indicates that democratic development appears to be stagnating. Click here to see data from the report.
