Russian president Vladimir Putin vowed Feb. 1 to protect the press. Responding to an international outcry over the murder of Russian journalist and former Courage in Journalism Award recipient Anna Politkovskaya, Putin for the first time acknowleged the importance of Politkovskaya's work. He had previously said Politkovskaya's "influence on political life in Russia was minimal.” According to a recent CPJ study, Russia is the third deadliest country in the world for journalists over the past 15 years.
