The 2008 Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism, Storytelling in Many Voices, Many Media will take place March 14-16 in Boston. The conference will examine the art and craft of nonfiction reporting. Keynote speakers include John Hockenberry, journalist and commentator known for his work on Dateline NBC and NPR’s "The Infinite Mind" and Dana Priest and Anne Hull, investigative journalists for The Washington Post.  Visit the Nieman Web site for details or to register.

The Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma is now accepting applications for the Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma. The awards recognize exemplary newspaper and radio journalism on the impact of violence, crime, disaster and other traumatic events on individuals, families or communities. African journalists are eligible to apply for the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in African HIV/AIDS Journalism. Two journalists for ABC News were killed in Baghdad May 17 by unidentified gunmen. Cameraman Alaa Uldeen Aziz and soundman Saif Laith Yousuf were on their way home from the ABC News' Baghdad bureau.

Mizzima News, a Burmese news agency whose head office was recently raided by Indian authorities, was named the winner of the International Press Institute's Free Media Pioneer Award. Missima was started in 1998 by a group of journalists in exile. Visit IPI's website to read more.

Kate Webb, a journalist who reported on the Vietnam War and covered coups and strife in Asia for more than three decades, died May 13. She was 64. Born in New Zealand, Webb went to Vietnam in 1967 and worked for United Press International; she was one of the only full-time women reporters covering the war. An Iraq militant believed to be involved in the kidnapping of IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner Jill Carroll has allegedly been killed. Muharib Abdul Latif al-Jubouri was identified as the senior minister of information for al Qaeda in Iraq. He was reportedly killed in a fight north of Baghdad. Read the CNN article.

Howayda Taha Matwali, a producer for Al-Jazeera, was convicted May 1 on charges of harming Egypt’s national interest and falsely depicting events for her work on a documentary exposing police abuse. She was fined and sentenced to six months in prison. Matwali, of Qatar, also works as a reporter for the London-based daily Al-Quds al-Arabi. Read the CPJ alert.

Umida Niyazova, an independent journalist in Uzbekistan and a human rights advocate, was sentenced May 1 to seven years in prison. At a trial that was closed to the press, Niyazova was found guilty of charges of smuggling subversive literature and distributing foreign aid material that threatens national security. Niyazova, who has already spent more than three months in jail, will have 10 days to appeal the charges.  Read the CPJ alert.

As their presence in the blogosphere increases, female bloggers are facing increased threats. Women are targets of sexual harassment and other threats, which are often of a more explicit and malicious nature than those against men. Read the article in The Washington Post.
