Global Human Rights will be Focus of First Elizabeth Neuffer Forum on Human Rights and Journalism in Boston on May 10

Washington, DC – Global human rights with a special emphasis on women’s rights will be the focus of the first annual Elizabeth Neuffer Forum on Human Rights and Journalism, to be held at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston on May 10 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The forum is presented by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) in collaboration with the family and friends of Elizabeth Neuffer with support from The Boston Globe. It is co-sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.

Elizabeth Neuffer was a Boston Globe reporter and a winner of a 1998 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award. Her life mission was to promote international understanding of human rights and social justice. She was killed while on assignment in Iraq in 2003.

The forum will consist of two panels of distinguished journalists and human rights advocates:

Panel One: Uncovering Injustice: What Human Rights Stories Aren’t Being Told?

Moderator Lisa Mullins is the chief anchor of Public Radio International’s The World, which is broadcast from WGBH radio in Boston.

Panelists include:

-Pam Constable, deputy foreign editor of The Washington Post, who covered the war in Afghanistan;

-Corinne Dufka, senior Africa researcher for Human Rights Watch, who won an IWMF Courage in Journalism Award when she was a Reuters photographer;

-Indira Lakshmanan, Central and South America correspondent for The Boston Globe; and

-Anthony Lewis, retired foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times.

Panel Two: Women’s Human Rights Around the World

Moderator Tom Ashbrook, is host of On Point for WBUR-FM in Boston.

Panelists include:

-Angela King, former special advisor to the U.N. Secretary General on gender issues and advancement of women, who will speak about the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women; and

-Pamela Shifman, UNICEF project officer on sexual abuse and exploitation in humanitarian crises, who will speak about violence against women in Darfur.

“Elizabeth believed that shedding light upon injustice was the best way to compel change and make a difference in the world,” said Peter Canellos, Elizabeth Neuffer’s partner and Washington, DC, bureau chief of The Boston Globe.

“The IWMF is extremely excited to launch this forum and subsequent fellowship in her name. We hope that the topics discussed at the Elizabeth Neuffer Forum will promote an ongoing dialogue about human rights,” added Lisa Woll, IWMF executive director.

The Elizabeth Neuffer Forum on Human Rights and Journalism is a project of the Elizabeth Neuffer IWMF Fund. In addition to the forum, the fund supports the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship. The nine-month fellowship is given each year to a woman journalist as an opportunity to focus exclusively on human rights journalism. The winner of the first Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship will be announced at the forum.

The Elizabeth Neuffer Fund is generously supported by The Boston Globe, Peter Canellos, Mark Neuffer, Carolyn Lee, the Correspondents Fund, MIT Center for International Studies and United Nations Foundation and numerous friends of Elizabeth Neuffer.

The Elizabeth Neuffer Forum is open to the public. Space is limited and reservations are required. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP to neuffer@iwmf.org or telephone (202) 496-1992.

The IWMF was launched in 1990 with a mission to strengthen the role of women in the news media worldwide, based on the belief that no press is truly free unless women share an equal voice. The IWMF network includes more than 1,500 women and men in the media in more than 130 countries worldwide. The IWMF is celebrating its Fifteenth Anniversary Year in 2005.
