Humanitarian Interventions to be Focus of 2006 Elizabeth Neuffer Forum
Washington, DC – Humanitarian interventions will be the focus of the second Elizabeth Neuffer Forum on Human Rights and Journalism, to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 10 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston.
The forum is presented by the International Women’s Media Foundation in collaboration with the family and friends of Elizabeth Neuffer with support from The Boston Globe. It is co-sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.
Elizabeth Neuffer, a Boston Globe reporter and a 1998 winner of a Courage in Journalism Award from the IWMF, was killed while on assignment in Iraq in 2003. Her life mission was to promote international understanding of human rights and social justice.
Keynote speaker for the luncheon is Samantha Power, the Pulitzer-prize winning author of A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide.
The forum will also offer a panel of distinguished journalists and human rights advocates. Panel moderator Amy Goodman is an anchor and senior producer of Democracy Now!, an independent daily news program airing on more than 350 radio stations in North America.
Panelists include:
- Anja Niedringhaus, Associated Press photojournalist and 2005 IWMF Courage in Journalism Awardee
- Anne Barnard, Boston Globe, assigned to Iraq
- Gayle Smith, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress; senior director for African affairs at the National Security Council, 1998-2001
- Nicolas de Torrente, U.S. Executive Director, Doctors Without Borders
The Elizabeth Neuffer Forum on Human Rights and Journalism is a project of the Elizabeth Neuffer IWMF Fund. In addition to the forum, the fund supports the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship. The nine-month fellowship is given each year to a woman journalist as an opportunity to focus exclusively on human rights journalism. The winner of the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship will be announced at the forum.
The Elizabeth Neuffer Fund is generously supported by The Boston Globe, Peter Canellos, Mark Neuffer, Carolyn Lee, the Correspondents Fund, MIT Center for International Studies and United Nations Foundation and numerous friends of Elizabeth Neuffer.
The Elizabeth Neuffer Forum is open to the public. Space is limited and reservations are required. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP to neuffer@iwmf.org or telephone (202) 496-1998, ext. 5.
