Journalists around the world are invted to to apply for scholarships to attend and cover the 16th International AIDS Conference in Canada, to be held in August in Toronto. Submissions are now being accepted for the Rory Peck Awards, an international competition that recognizes freelance cameramen and camerawomen in TV news, current affairs and features. The annual awards recognize excellence in covering the news, especially in regions where it is difficult to work as a freelancer. The International Reporting Project is accepting applications for an 11-day fellowship trip to Nigeria. The award is open to "gatekeeper" editors and producers in the U.S. with at least seven years of experience. The Knight Foundation is seeking new ideas, pilot projects, commercial products and leadership initiatives that will improve the flow of information and news in the public interest. The foundation just launched the Knight Brothers 21st Century News Challenge. It will invest up to $5 million in its first year "in community news projects that best use the digital world to connect people to the real world." The competition is open to anyone. UNESCO is accepting nominations of candidates for its 2007 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Named in honor of a Colombian journalist who was killed in 1986 for criticizing the country's drug lords, the $25,000 prize honours a person or organization that has made a notable contribution to the defense and promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world. The George A. and Eliza Howard Foundation is accepting nominations for fellowships in media studies. Fellowships will be awarded to mid-career artists and scholars to augment paid sabbaticals and support independent projects. Fellows must be U.S. residents or affiliated with a U.S. institution. The Nieman Foundation for Journalism will begin accepting applications for the 2008 Nieman Fellowships on Oct. 15. The fellowships give journalists from around the world an opportunity to study at Harvard University for the 2007-2008 academic year.
