IWMF Leadership Institutes for Women Journalists

IWMF Leadership Institutes empower women in the news media to be successful in their careers. Leadership Institute programs take different forms in different countries. But their goal is to provide the training and the network for women who want to move up the career ladder.

United States

The IWMF's U.S. Leadership Institute provides critical career building skills and the opportunity to network with colleagues. Veteran women news executives use role-playing and other practical exercises to demonstrate leadership styles and to share strategies for managing people and change, negotiating salary, navigating politics, balancing work and home and much more. This program is supported by the McCormick Foundation.

  • Former Soviet Republics

The IWMF, in partnership with the Kazickas Foundation and Internews Network, held its first ever Leadership Institute for journalists from the former Soviet Republics in April 2008. During the three-day workshop in Vilnius, Lithuania, participants discussed the challenges of media management, the perception of women journalists in former Soviet republics and the qualities and attitudes that produce inspired leaders.

    Africa

The IWMF pioneered leadership training in Africa beginning in Zimbabwe in 1998. Since then, the IWMF has conducted training in English and French, reaching women across the continent. The IWMF held a Leadership Institute in February 2009 for African women journalists in Kampala, Uganda. Another Leadership Institute will be held in 2010 in Bamako, Mali.
