Information the IWMF Collects and the Purposes for Which It Is Used
Aggregate Information
We gather certain general information about the users that visit the site and the manner in which they use the site. This information is "anonymous' in that it does not identify the individual user, although it may include the user's IP address (that is, "aol.com" or "yahoo.com" or other address from which the user visits the site), referral data showing the last Web page visited by the user before clicking over to the site, and/or the browser and computer type employed by the user. The IWMF uses this information to determine the effectiveness of the site and the various pages and features on the site, all with the goal of improving the site for our users. For example, we track the number of visitors to our site and the number of visitors that view each page of the site, as well as the frequency of their visits and the search terms that they enter into the site's search mechanism. This aggregated tracking information helps us to determine which areas of our site users like and don't like based upon traffic to those areas.
Personally Identifiable Information
The IWMF requests personally identifiable information -- user names, addresses, email addresses and/or other information -- in certain areas of the site. These areas are described below. When the IWMF requests personal information, the organization will only use this information to alert users to periodic updates (with the user's permission) and to help the IWMF improve the site and develop new features based on general user preferences. The IWMF does not and will not share any individual information users provide with third parties.
Announcements
The IWMF regularly sends newsletters, announcements and news alerts to email addresses supplied by users visiting the site. users are added to the address list at their request or by failing to opt out when they sign up for online discussions, e-commerce transactions or the IWMF Directory. users that do not wish to receive the IWMF mailings can remove themselves from the list by replying to any IWMF message with the word "UNSUBSCRIBE" in the subject line or through the link provided in the IWMF message itself.
Online Discussions
Users may wish to register their names and email addresses as they participate in the online discussions. This is optional, as users may access and contribute to discussion boards anonymously. The IWMF may post selected comments from the discussion boards throughout the site but will do so without referencing the user's name.
E-commerce functions
The IWMF requests information from users on the purchase/donation form. users must provide contact information (such as name, email, and shipping address) and financial information (such as credit card number, expiration date). This information is used for billing purposes and to fill customer's orders. If there is a problem processing an order, the information is used to contact the user. The IWMF subcontracts some or all of the e-commerce functions to third party vendors. These third party vendors have agreed not to disclose any information it obtains from the IWMF's users and to use the information only as necessary to complete the applicable e-commerce transactions.
The IWMF Directory
The IWMF Directory is provided as a networking tool for women journalists around the world. The purpose of the IWMF directory is to publish information as broadly as possible, and all individuals listing themselves in the IWMF Directory by necessity agree to the publication. It is the individual's responsibility to monitor their listing and notify the IWMF when changes are necessary.
If a user's personally identifiable information changes (such as zip code, phone, email or postal address), or if a user no longer wishes to be listed in the IWMF Directory, she is responsible for contacting the IWMF to correct, update or delete/deactivate the information.
