Huda Ahmed, the 2006-07 IWMF Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow and one of the recipients of a 2007 Courage in Journalism Award, writes in the Huffington Post about the excitement of Iraq's soccer team winning the Asian Cup against Saudi Arabia. Ahmed was formerly a reporter for McClatchy Newspapers in Iraq.  Click here to read the article. 

Russian investigators have arrested ten people in connection with the killing of 2002 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award recipient Anna Politkovskaya. According to journalists at Novaya Gazeta, the independent newspaper where Politkovskaya worked, those detained include members of an ethnic criminal group specializing in contract killings, as well as former and current agents of law enforcement agencies and secret services. Egyptian blogger Wael Abbas and Burmese investigative reporter May Thingyan Hein were named 2007 Knight International Journalism Award winners by the International Center for Journalists. The award, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, recognizes individuals who have raised the standards of media excellence in their countries. The recipients will be honored at the ICFJ Awards Dinner in November. Read more.

Ten winners of Knight-Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism were announced Aug. 8. Recipients were chosen from a field of 133 entries by a national panel of judges. Awards are administered by J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland. The top winner will be announced Sept. 17 at the National Press Club. Lydia Cacho, a Mexican journalist who is a recipient of a 2007 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award, was featured in La Opinion, a Spanish-language newspaper based in California.   Read the article (in Spanish).
