Applications are now being accepted for a free National Institutes of Health training session on media coverage of medical research. The three-day course, to be held April 12-14 in Bethesda, Md., is designed to help develop journalists' ability to evaluate and report on medical research. The Association for Women in Communications is now accepting entries for its 2007 Clarion Competition, which recognizes excellence across all communications disciplines. The competition is open to women, men and students worldwide.  Visit AWC’s website for details.

African journalists may apply for the 2007 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards, which aim to reinforce the importance of the journalist's role in Africa and to recognize and develop journalistic talent. Deadline is Feb. 21.  Visit CNN's website for details.

Journalists worldwide may submit nominations to CBC News in Canada for the inaugural Global Shining Light Award, which honors excellence in investigative reporting in a developing country or country in transition. Deadline is Feb. 16, and awards will be presented at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in May.  Visit the website for details.

The USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellowship Program is accepting applications from arts writers, critics, reporters, or editors from print, broadcast, and online journalism who are interested in learning more about artistic disciplines. Fellowships are open to international and U.S.-based journalists. Deadline is March 9.  Visit USC Annenberg’s website for details.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas will offer a new online Spanish-language course called "Tools for Investigative Journalism." Created by Argentine journalist Sandra Crucianelli, the free course will begin in February.  Read more about the course (in Spanish).

The Second International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training will be held in May in Kenya. Called eLearning Africa, the conference focuses on information and communications technology and building infrastructures. Partners for the event include the African Capacity Building Foundation and African Youth Movement.   Visit the conference website.

The Center for Defending Freedom of Journalists invites journalists and lawyers from six Arab countries to apply for a regional program to learn necessary skills to become trainers for their media organizations. CDFJ is organizing the program along with Netherlands-based Free Voice.  Visit CDFJ's website for details.

The Council on Contemporary Families is now accepting applications for its 2007 Media Awards competition. The awards honor outstanding journalism that contributes to the public understanding of contemporary family issues. Writers, editors and producers are invited to submit applications. Deadline is March 2, and the awards will be presented in May in Chicago.  Visit CCF's website for details.

The Institute of International Education offers fellowships to academic professionals who are under threat. The Scholar Rescue Fund selects individuals on the basis of academic qualifications, quality of work and urgency of risks faced. Application deadlines occur several times throughout the year; the next is April 1. Visit IIE's website to learn more.

Crimes of War is now accepting applications for a one-day training workshop on the laws of armed conflict and how they apply in the circumstances of contemporary warfare. Mid-career journalists may apply to attend the session, which will be held March 28 in Washington, DC. Application deadline is March 9.  Visit the Crimes of War website for more information.

Journalists from the Middle East and North Africa may submit applications for the 2007 Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press. The award, which aims to promote media freedom and the rule of law in the region, is named after the former Lebanese columnist and academic who was assassinated in 2005 for criticising Syria's policy toward Lebanon. It is presented by the European Commission Delegation in Lebanon in association with the Samir Kassir Foundation. Deadline is March 30.  Click here for more information.

The Atlanta-based Carter Center is now accepting applications for its Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism. Six one-year fellowships will be awarded to journalists to study a selected topic regarding mental health or mental illnesses. Applicants must have at least three years of experience in print or electronic journalism. Deadline is April 23.  Visit the Carter Center website for details.

Mid-career journalists are invited to apply for a six-month fellowship with the Kiplinger Program for Public Affairs Journalism at Ohio State University. Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Deadline is July 24.  Visit the Kiplinger website to learn more.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2007 Excellence in Urban Journalism Award. Sponsored by Enterprise Community Partners and the Freedom Forum, the award recgonizes quality reporting on major issues facing the United States' urban areas, particularly inner cities.
