The National Institutes of Health's Office of Medical Applications of Research will hold a free training session to help journalists learn to report on medical research. The training session will be held June 29-July 1 at Dartmouth College.

The International Center for Journalists is accepting applications for its International Journalism Exchange, to be held October 7 through November 11. ICFJ will choose 10 newspaper editors from the developing world with at least five years’ experience to participate in the exchange. Deadline is June 1.  Visit ICFJ’s website.

Journalists around the world are invted to to apply for scholarships to attend and cover the 16th International AIDS Conference in Canada, to be held in August in Toronto. The conference is organized by the Switzerland-based International AIDS Society. Deadline is May 15.  Visit the AIDS Conference website.

Submissions are now being accepted for the Rory Peck Awards, an international competition that recognizes freelance cameramen and camerawomen in TV news, current affairs and features. The annual awards recognize excellence in covering the news, especially in regions where it is difficult to work as a freelancer. Categories include humanitarian footage, hard news story, feature and outstanding service to the freelance journalism community. Deadline is September 1.  Read more on the Rory Peck Awards website.

The International Reporting Project is accepting applications for an 11-day fellowship trip to Nigeria. The award is open to "gatekeeper" editors and producers in the U.S. with at least seven years of experience. The International Reporting Project and The Poynter Institute’s News University recently launched "International Reporting Basics: What You Need to Know Before You Go," a free online course to help reporters prepare for an assignment before they go abroad.  Click here for more information or to register

The Knight Foundation is seeking new ideas, pilot projects, commercial products and leadership initiatives that will improve the flow of information and news in the public interest. The foundation just launched the Knight Brothers 21st Century News Challenge. It will invest up to $5 million in its first year "in community news projects that best use the digital world to connect people to the real world." The competition is open to anyone. The deadline for submissions is December 31, and winners will be announced in the spring of 2007.   Visit the News Challenge website.

UNESCO is accepting nominations of candidates for its 2007 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Named in honor of a Colombian journalist who was killed in 1986 for criticizing the country's drug lords, the $25,000 prize honours a person or organization that has made a notable contribution to the defense and promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world. The George A. and Eliza Howard Foundation is accepting nominations for fellowships in media studies. Fellowships will be awarded to mid-career artists and scholars to augment paid sabbaticals and support independent projects. Fellows must be U.S. residents or affiliated with a U.S. institution. The Nieman Foundation for Journalism will begin accepting applications for the 2008 Nieman Fellowships on Oct. 15. The fellowships give journalists from around the world an opportunity to study at Harvard University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean are eligible to for the Inter American Press Association's 2007 Awards for Excellence in Journalism. The 11 awards categories include human rights, news coverage and photography. Deadline is Feb. 1.   Visit the website for more information.

Entries are now being accepted for the Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment. The annual award recognizes journalists in North America for exemplary environmental reporting. Deadline is March 5, 2007.   Visit the website to learn more.

Applications are now being accepted for the Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism. The fellowships offer full-time U.S. print or broadcast journalists with at least five years of experience the opportunity to study environmental science and policy during the 2008-2009 academic year.
