Humphrey Fellowships Allow Journalists to Study in the U.S.

The Hubert H. Humphrey fellowship program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, allows journalists with a minimum of five years of professional experience the opportunity to continue their education in the U.S. The Fellowship includes a ten-month stay at a U.S. university, where recipients will take classes and build professional affiliations with news groups. CCJ Calls for Applications for Journalist in Residence Program

The Committee of Concerned Journalists is now accepting applications for its new program, Journalists in Residence. The program was created as part of CCJ's commitment to share the best of American journalism practices with reporters around the globe. Journalists Invited to Apply for Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health

The Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health program is an opportunity for print, broadcast and online journalists to pursue an area of interest in U.S. health policy issues. Environmental Reporting Fellowship Open to Minority Journalists

The Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting, a program of the Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, is a fellowship program that provides traditionally underrepresented racial and ethnic minority journalists an opportunity to learn basic science, gain environmental research and reporting skills and apply themselves in a related reporting assignment. NIH Offers Training for Health Journalists and Editors

Applications are now being accepted for Medicine in the Media: The Challenges of Reporting on Medical Research. The free annual training is presented by the National Institutes for Health to help develop journalists' and editors’ ability to evaluate and report on medical research. The training will be held June 24-27, 2009, in Bethesda, Md. Application deadline is Jan. 30. Read more about or apply for the NIH course.

World Hunger Year Invites Entries for Harry Chapin Media Awards

The Harry Chapin Media Awards were created to encourage the media to "tell the story of hunger and poverty." The awards honor print and electronic media for outstanding coverage that positively impacts hunger, poverty and self-reliance. CFR Seeks Nominations for the Edward R. Murrow Fellowship

The Council for Foreign Relations' 2009-10 competition for the Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship is open to individuals who have covered international news as working journalists for print, broadcast or online media widely available in the United States. The fellow is granted nine months of research, writing, and involvement in all activities at the Council in New York. Deadline is February 1, 2009. Visit the CFR Web site for details.

Journalists Worldwide Invited to Apply for Nieman Fellowships

The Nieman Foundation selects at least 12 U.S. and 12 international journalists for Nieman Fellowships each year. The fellowships are awarded to working journalists who come to Harvard University for a paid year of study, seminars and special events. The application deadline for the 2009-2010 academic year is Dec. 15 for international journalists and Jan. 31, 2009, for U.S. journalists. Visit the Nieman Web site for more information about the program.

Applications Now Accepted for Knight Fellowships

Full-time journalists are invited to apply for Knight Fellowships. Beginning this year, the program has revised its selection process to reflect a new emphasis on journalistic innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership, including an emphasis on developing and strengthening press freedom around the world. Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism to be held in March

Nieman Foundation Offers Investigative Journalism Prize

The Nieman Foundation will present the Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism in March 2009. The $20,000 award honors investigative reporting of stories of national significance where the public interest is being ill-served. Taylor Award Encourages Fairness in News Coverage

The Nieman Foundation is now accepting applications for the $10,000 Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers, which encourages fairness in news coverage by daily newspapers in the United States. The application deadline is Jan. 16, 2009. For more information, visit the Nieman Web site.

HRW Announces Hellman/Hammett Grants

Human Rights Watch offers grants for writers worldwide who have been victims of political persecution and are in financial need. The Hellman/Hammett grants are awarded annually after nominations have been reviewed by a selection committee composed of authors, editors, and journalists. Nomination deadline is Dec. 8. Nominations Now Accepted for Ridenhour Prizes

The Fertel Foundation and The Nation Institute, co-sponsors of The Ridenhour Prizes, are now accepting applications for the awards. Ridenhour Prizes recognize individuals whose acts have protected the public interest, promoted social justice or illuminated a more just vision of society. Nomination deadline is Dec. 1. Metcalf Institute Announces 2009 Training Fellowships for Journalists

The Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting announces a science training fellowship for journalists. Phillips Foundation Offers Journalism Fellowships

Print and online journalists with less than ten years of professional experience are eligible to apply for journalism fellowships from the Phillips Foundation. The fellowships support journalists who share the foundation's mission to advance constitutional principles, a democratic society and a vibrant free enterprise system. Deadline is March 2, 2009. Applications Accepted for Ted Scripps Fellowships

U.S. reporters, editors, producers and freelancers with at least five years full-time experience are invited to apply for Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism. Award Open to Young Women Journalists

The Jayaraman family and the Network of Women in Media, India jointly announce the Anupama Jayaraman Memorial Award for young women journalists for the year 2009.  The award is intended for a woman print journalist in India who covers issues relating to human rights and social justice and is 25 years old or younger. OSI Launches Fellowship Program

The Open Society Institute recently launched a new fellowship program to support outstanding idea entrepreneurs — including journalists, activists, scholars, and practitioners — to work on projects that inspire meaningful public debate, shape public policy and generate intellectual ferment within OSI. USC Annenberg Institute for Justice and Journalism Offers Fund for Journalists

Entries Accepted for Claudio Accardi Award

Entries are now being accepted for the Claudio Accardi Award, which provides financial assistance to young people who report on war. Panos Institute Offers Fellowships on Conflict Reporting

Applications Accepted for Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships

Applications are now being accepted for Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships, which offer a cultural and professional exchange program for journalists. Applicants must be full-time journalists and citizens of a developing country. Deadline is Aug. 1.

Reuters Foundation Offers News Writing Course

The Reuters Foundation is accepting applications for a course on international news writing for journalists from the developing world. The course, which will take place in London, will run from Aug. 11-22. Applicants must be fluent in English and must have worked for media organizations for at least two years. Deadline is June 27. McCormick Seeks Women Digital Media Entrepreneuers

The McCormick Tribune Foundation, in partnership with J-Lab at the University of Maryland, invites women digital media entrepreneurs to apply for a new project. Three women-led digital media projects will be selected to receive $10,000 grants to launch their ideas and blog about it for the next year. Application deadline is May 1.

IRP Announces Gatekeeper Trip to Korea

The International Reporting Project is now accepting applications for a Gatekeeper Editor Trip to Korea for U.S. editors and producers interested in learning more about the Korean peninsula. Oak Institute Offers Human Rights Fellowship

KFF Accepts Applications for Media Fellowship

The Kaiser Family Foundation is now accepting applications for its Kaiser Media Fellowship in Health Program, which is designed to help journalists and commentators do the best possible job of keeping the public informed about U.S. health issues. Institute for Justice Journalism Offers Fellowships

Ethnic media journalists are invited to apply for fellowships offered by USC Annenberg's Institute for Justice and Journalism. J-Lab Calls for Applications for New Voices Project

J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism invites U.S. nonprofit groups and education organizations to apply for funding to launch community news ventures in 2008. Society for News Design Announces Competition

Editors and designers worldwide are invited to enter the Society for News Design's Best of Newspaper Design Creative Competition. Newspaper work published in 2007 may be entered in categories such as news, features and information graphics. IRP Announces Gatekeeper Trip to Uganda for Editors

Five outstanding professional journalists from Latin America will be chosen to conduct two weeks of reporting in Washington, D.C. The AL DIA Foundation invites journalists to apply for the Felix Varela Award for Excellence in Spanish-Language Journalism in the United States. The Society of American Business Editors and Writers invites journalists to apply for its 14th annual Best in Business contest. NIH Offers Training for Health Journalists

The National Institutes of Health announces a free annual training to help develop journalists' ability to evaluate and report on medical research. FAIR Calls for Applications for Fellowships

The Forum for African Investigative Reporters invites African investigative journalists to apply for 2008 grants. Grants Offered for Investigative Journalism Conference

Investigative journalists from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America are invited to apply for grants to attend the 2008 Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Lillehammer, Norway, in September. Conference attendees are to be selected by the end of April.

The Society for News Design is accepting applications for its Best of Multimedia Design competition. Yale University will host the 18th annual Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference May 20-23, 2008. The program is geared toward journalists writing about information technology and policy.
