Journalists at Risk Offered Assistance, SOS Hotline
Legal funds for journalists facing prison, medical care for reporters brutally attacked for covering the news and funds for relocation are offered through a journalist assistance program.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has set up a system to help journalists in distress. The program also raises funds for journalists from outside sources and collaborates with other freedom of expression organizations. CPJ provide logistical support to journalists when they resettle in exile and refers journalists to resources, including information on grants, fellowships, and awards. With journalists under increasing attack around the world, Reporters Without Borders is offering working press covering war zones everything from insurance policies and bullet-proof vests and helmets to a “press SOS” hotline.
Staff journalists not covered by employer insurance or freelancers of any nationality covering war zones and disasters can sign up for a policy offered by a Canadian insurance company. In partnership with American Express, Reporters Without Borders is offering a “press SOS” hotline for any journalist in trouble. Journalists can contact the Reporters Without Borders team immediately, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling +33 1 4777-7414 or by going to any local American Express agency. Depending on the problem, a Reporters Without Borders representative will provide the journalist with advice or contacts, or will alert local or consular authorities.
