Barbara Cochran, president of the Radio-Television News Directors Association, will receive the Edith Wortman First Amendment Award from The Matrix Foundation. The award, which honors individuals working to support the First Amendment and First Amendment rights, will be presented during the Association for Women in Communications conference in Washington on Sept. 27. Nancy Hicks Maynard, the first black woman to be a reporter at The New York Times, died Sept. 21 in Los Angeles. Maynard also bought and published The Oakland Tribune with her husband. Read the article in The New York Times.
