Daniele Mastrogiacomo, a journalist for the Italian daily La Repubblica, and two Afghan assistants, continue to be held after being abducted around March 4 in Afghanistan. Mastrogiacomo, a journalist with 27 years of experience, has been a La Repubblica correspondent since 2002. Read the CPJ alert.

Alan Johnston, the BBC's Gaza correspondent, was abducted in Gaza March 12. Johnston, who was been based in Gaza since 2004, was seized by four armed men as he was driving near the BBC's office. Read the CPJ alert.

Thirty-three women, more than 20 of whom are journalists, were arrested March 4 in Tehran after organizing a protest against charges brought against activists who organised a women's demonstration in June 2006. Several of the women remain imprisoned. Read the IFEX alert.

Internews has created a slideshow that celebrates women in the media in honor of International Women’s Day. The show emphasizes the impact that women are making in media all around the world. Visit Internews’ website to view the slideshow.

A 24-hour Internet radio broadcast will be held to commemorate International Women’s Day. Organized by the Women's International Network of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters, the broadcast will feature documentaries, interviews, debates, poetry and music. In honor of International Women's Day, Maria Cristina Caballero, former director of investigations at Semana, a weekly news magazine in Colombia, wrote about former IWMF Courage in Journalism Award Anna Politkovskaya, a Russian journalist who was killed in October 2006.
